What little we’ve seen so far is certainly encouraging, but we can’t wait to clamp our eyeballs on some proper gameplay. Exactly what that will mean for the visuals and overall performance of the finished game remains to be seen, but we’re hoping for a quantum leap forward from the studio in terms of graphics and character animations, which were starting to look just a little bit wooden in Fallout 4. One thing we know for certain is that Starfield is the first game being built using the latest iteration of the studio’s in-house engine, Creation Engine 2. What engine is Bethesda using for Starfield? Will we have to wait until E3 to get another look at the sci-fi RPG, or will we see more of the game sooner? Only time will tell. Although Bethesda has released several trailers, we’ve not yet seen proper Starfield gameplay footage and it has mostly been a mix of in-engine CGI and concept art. If you want to get a good look at the game in action then you’re going to have to wait a while longer.

Since then we’ve been treated to a series of shorter trailers that unveil different planets that players will be able to explore in Starfield, including locations in both the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective, the two main factions in the game. The sci-fi RPG was first teased all the way back in 2018, but we got a much better look at the game during E3 2021, when Bethesda shared a longer two-minute Starfield release date trailer that set the scene and revealed more of this enigmatic futuristic universe. Howard told the same publication that Starfield will be a “more hardcore” RPG than we typically see from the studio, a claim that has us thoroughly intrigued. That’s a feature that fans of previous games will remember from Skyrim, Fallout 4, and even Oblivion, although we have to agree with Todd’s opinion that first-person is definitely the way to go. We also know that players will be able to experience the universe of Starfield from both first and third-person perspectives after Howard confirmed as much to the Telegraph. If that wasn’t tantalising enough, in the same interview Managing Director Ashley Cheng compared the game to a certain favourite universe of ours set in A Galaxy Far, Far Away by calling it a “Han Solo simulator”. With the release date already in the bag, the big question is: what kind of gameplay experience will Starfield offer? While much of the game is still shrouded in mystery, we do know a few things about Starfield’s gameplay.įor starters, studio frontman Todd Howard called Starfield “Skyrim in space” in an interview with Launcher. It will also be seven years and one day after the launch of the studio’s last major role-playing game, Fallout 4.īethesda seems confident of hitting that date, and given how the title has been in development for several years already (the studio told the Guardian that “active development was from when finished Fallout 4”), the team there has had plenty of time to get things ready and we’re very much looking forward to next year’s planned launch. That’ll be exactly 11 years to the day since the release of a little known fantasy RPG by the name of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
